School and Work and Life – oh my!

Well friends, it has been a crazy couple of weeks! I have never felt so busy!

School started 3 weeks ago… It has been a weird mix of classes this semester, as opposed to last year when ALL of my courses were English oriented. Now I have 1 English Class , 1 Spanish Class, 1 Writing Class and 1 Art Class.

Mi Universidad:

Early English Lit is going okay. The teacher doesn’t believe in standardized tests, so I am immensely grateful for that because I don’t either! So far we have read classics like Beowulf and Sir Gawain and The Green Knight. Contrary to most of my friends who read these in High School, I had never read these stories before. They have a very Jonathan Edwards feel to them – which I love. 🙂

Spanish is going MUCH better than I expected. It is still insanely difficult, but my teacher is fun and patient and helpful…. I think I just may make it out alright.

Drawing 1 is my art class this semester. My teacher reminds me of Liz Lemon, err… Tina Fey. Not in the funny haha sort of way. She isn’t funny at all actually…. But that she looks like her and has her hair and her frumpy “Liz Lemon” clothes and her facial expressions…. She is also very nice. If I could get her to make a witty comment, I’d be in heaven. 🙂

Two of my favorite drawings I have done. Both were done with Charcoal. The first was on Newsprint Pad and the 2nd was on Manila paper.

My writing class is Composition Theory. There is a lot of reading homework and Dr. Donnelli loves to keep us busy. In spite of all of this, Comp Theory is turning out to be one of my most helpful and most enjoyable classes yet! It is – so far – completely pedagogically oriented. I feel like I am learning practical hands-on ideas and concepts that will help me tremendously when it is my turn to teach…. very good stuff…

I went running on the brand new track at Park:

This week I had 3 jobs. Most days I woke up early to go to school, went to one job after that, went back to school and then went to another job after that. With the exception of Wednesday and Today – I was up and out the door by 8am and did not return home until 10:30pm. Exhaustion was the outcome. Today I skipped my morning class just so I could get more than 5 hours of sleep for once. I feel great!

I decided to go seasonal at Barnes and Noble. The short story is that I wasn’t out looking for another job, but I was becoming silently frustrated with B&N. A lady came in and offered me a job at Lenscrafters completely unsolicited. I inquired into it and discovered that she was the Regional Director of HR for Lenscrafters and that if SHE wanted me to come apply, then I basically had the job.  I have now work at Lenscrafters for 3 days and I am working there again this afternoon. There is a lot of training involved, but I LOVE IT. The work environment is so much more professional and laid back. Yesterday I helped a little girl find the cutest bright pink frames for “her style.” It makes me want to have some babies just so I can buy them cute glasses! 😀

Tomorrow is my last day at B&N. I did not quit, but I went “seasonal” which allows me to work ONLY when I am available (Summers and Holidays). The perk is that I get to keep my B&N discount all year long. Yay! 🙂

I also was contacted on by a man who wanted someone to tutor his wife in English Spelling, Grammar, Speaking and Writing. She is from Iran (not I-Ran like I pronounced it, but “EE-Rahn” like it is really pronounced.) The pay is worth the added 6 hours a week to my schedule and actually works out perfectly! I tutor her directly after my Spanish classes on Tuesday and Thursday every week, so it doesn’t disrupt anything in my life at all. We had out first session yesterday. His wife – Fatemeh- is so sweet and so eager to learn. She speaks conversational English well and is easy to understand. She wants to go to college, but has the writing abilities of a 4th-5th grader. I am up for the challenge and felt totally in my element yesterday.

God is so good to bring along something like this. Not only do we need the extra money, but this is MY PASSION. I want to do this as my job after Grad School and what better experience than to be a private tutor to someone one on one! 🙂

So that is where my life has been for the past 3 weeks or so. In between work and school have been friends and church and baby showers and small coffee breaks, but all in all I have just been plain BUSY.

I made homemade cupcakes for a friend’s “Jungle Themed” Baby Shower:

I also made her a homemade Diaper Cake that turned out FANTASTIC!

Pumpkin Spice Lattes have recently come back in season. They make me soooo happy. 🙂

The good thing is that I feel great despite the fatigue. I am doing what I love and living life with people I love – who could ask for more?
The bad thing is that my house is an epic disaster….. anyone want to help me come clean Sunday? haha

Glad I could at least “catch up” on life by reading this. 🙂 Sounds like you’re keeping busy and enjoying what you’re doing, which is wonderful.

I totally empathize with your “epic disaster” of a house! I think I’ve cleaned my house a total of 3 times since I started school! lol (I might be under-exaggerating a little…) I finally dropped down to just one shift (Saturday) at Applebee’s. I am hoping to find a happy balance between school and work and rest…. oh, and my new love life. 🙂
